To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the death of Lt-Colonel FCB West from Bilton, killed by a stray shell on 28 September 1916 whilst riding his horse along the exposed road between Pozieres and his headquarters at the Zollern Redoubt. He was 33 years old and the highest ranking officer from the Rugby area to be killed in World War One. As the Commanding Officer of the 4th South Midlands Brigade (Howitzer) RFA he had been involved in the Battle of the Somme since 1 July 1916 and was responsible for the artillery preparations that preceeded the fall of Theipval 2 days before his death.
